‘Alchemy’ paper cuts in Italy

I can’t remember what city, probably Florence? Maybe Bologna… About 1998. A public space, possibly a church off a square, had a temporary exhibition by a contemporary artist who made A3 and A2 sized paper-based work. About 2 or 3 layers of paper were overlayed onto each other, each with drawings cut out, so that the cut lines on the different layers add depth. I think maybe they were backlight. In any case they were uncoloured. Just paper and shapes cut out. The images I recall are of Adam and Even, obscure symbols, and the source of inspiration was ‘Alchemy’.
